Preach. I was visiting my son and his family over the weekend. Like you, he gets the print version of WSJ on weekends. Saturday morning I retrieved it from the driveway, brought it in, sat at the kitchen table and began to read. In the next hour the different sections were spread across the table as my wife, son, daughter-in-law and grandson sat with me, leisurely reading and discussing different stories over coffee and breakfast. We don’t do that with our phones and iPads.

What a great moment. That's the kind of thing that everybody remembers for a long, long time.

Great piece. I've ditched the Kindle and gone back to paper books--I realized that when I read on a screen, I don't remember what I've read. On paper, it just sticks in my brain better. I'll use a Kindle for traveling, but otherwise I want the dead-tree edition.

Same. I have to use reading glasses now, but whatever. So much more fun having a book in your hands than an electronic device.

The distinction between being licensees vs readers hits hard. I've noticed how often archived artiles from major outlets just vanish without warning, and there's something unsettling about knowing my access to content can be revoked at any moment. The Traveling Wilburys example crystallizes this perfectly, when preservation becomes contingent on corporate decisions rather than actual ownership.

It's brutal, the realization that we're all just renting everything.

There are few things in life I miss more than the Sunday paper. My Dad delivered the Charlotte Observer when I was a kid, so we had one everyday. Once he finished with the Sunday edition, I could peruse at my leisure. I took the NYT for a few years but they won’t deliver where I live now. I really, really loved their Sunday paper. I don’t like the digital version as it’s hard to find what you want, reducing the effort to your Facebook feed, where you only read what pops up. I’m hoping heaven comes with a daily edition.

Love every bit of this. And yes, I hope heaven has papers that leave ink stains on our fingers.

Scary to find out, isn't it? I just checked and they're back ... but for how long? FOR HOW LONG?
