There's a better party happening now, come hang
Join me on Notes, it's already better than the bird site
[A quick midweek hit; the usual weekly post coming Saturday.]
Remember back in high school when you were at one party that had been cool but was starting to get kind of lame? You were having a great time catching up with old friends and meeting new ones, and then all of a sudden a bunch of screaming mouth-breathing louts and hypersensitive bad-faith demagogues and clowns trying to sell you crypto and actual Nazis showed up. That happened to you too, right?
Anyway, Twitter has long been my favorite social media site, but it’s fading fast, a slow-burn Dumpster fire belching out noxious fumes that infect anyone who spends any time on it. Which is a shame, because at its best, Twitter is an exceptional spot for breaking news, sharing jokes and staying connected. Now, it’s like a buffet where half the steam trays are filled with, like, week-old roadkill.
Perhaps as a replacement, perhaps as a healthier alternative, Substack — the site that hosts this here fine publication — has just rolled out a new Twitter-esque feature called Notes. Here’s one of my first:
I love the quick-hit nature of Notes (and, for that matter, Twitter) — a space for jokes, quotes, links, pics, quick-hit commentary and the like. I’m sure it’ll draw the usual sludge, but for now it’s mostly interesting people with interesting things to say in between asking you to subscribe to their newsletters. (Guilty.) If you’re interested, why, check it out right here …
… or find the “Notes” tab in the Substack app:
I’d also love to hear from you there. Reach out, say hello, talk shit, whatever. The best aspect of social media is the connections with real people, and for the moment, Notes seems to have that. Give it a go.
And for those of you who found this newsletter via Notes this week, welcome! Glad you’re here. See you Saturday!
